Integrity & Repair

Compression Sleeve

Engineered With Purpose.

The critical role that pipelines occupy in today’s society demands that the repair solutions that service them be both reliable and effective.  The Compression Sleeve inhibits the growth of cracks and crack-like features that threaten the integrity of a pipeline.

What It Does & Why It’s Different

The same time-tested, reliable steel repair sleeves that Allan Edwards has utilized for the past 70 years make up an integral component of our Compression Sleeve system.  This sleeve inhibits further growth of cracks or crack-like features in pipe. Because no circumferential welds are required, this Type A repair sleeve can be placed directly over pipe laminations, bypassing the limits of traditional Type B repair sleeves for maximum effectiveness.

While we don’t claim to offer the only compression sleeve on the market, we do claim a unique sleeve-heating method: induction heating. By eliminating the need for an open flame, we accomplish two things: we remove a potential workplace hazard, and we ensure measurable and controllable heat input.

How Does the Compression Sleeve Work?

Two halves of an Allan Edwards steel repair sleeve are placed on either side of the pipe and secured with hydraulic clamps. Heat induction (up to 400°F) applied across the sleeve induces circumferential sleeve expansion. While the sleeve is in the expanded state, tack welds are performed. The clamps and induction blanket are removed, and a final seam weld is performed to join the sleeve halves together. Once the sleeve cools, it contracts, putting the pipe into a state of compression. This compression treatment inhibits the growth of crack features and reduces fatigue stress in the base pipe.
